On Fighting Off Your Inner Demons
November 23, 2016

We need to stop ducking from our own reality, our own feelings. We must engage with the emotions that are stirring deep within. The ones that only come to us when we’re alone and our mind slips to our subconscious.

And we need to find a way to express these feelings outwardly, to stop hiding our true selves from one another.

People falsely believe that we need to put up a front to save face in our society.  At work and in other social settings it feels like we’re forced to keep our emotions captive.

But it’s not healthy. It’s even counter-intuitive. Relationships are built off emotion. Love is built off emotion. Support for one another is built off emotion.

How can we expect people to truly understand us if we wear this mask? How can we expect to receive help from others if they never know how we’re struggling, if they never see our pain?

The answer? We can’t.

The truth is we all have our own insecurities, our own doubts. We have our own internal monsters that chew away at us if we don’t keep them at bay.

The biggest problem we make is thinking we have to fight these battles alone. We try to ignore them. We let them fester. We don’t ask for help.

But by isolating ourselves we’re fighting a losing battle. We’re ignoring the allies around us that can provide the support we need.

And the longer we insulate ourselves, the longer we slip into darkness, the harder the battle appears to win. At a certain point, the feat may seem insurmountable. There may not appear to be a way out.

The truth is? There’s always a way out. There’s always an answer. You just might not be able to see it through your clouded mind.

You need more perspective. You need to reach out to others for help. You need to divulge your emotions to your support system. You need to realize you’re not alone in this fight and that people genuinely want to help.

At the end of the day, we all have our own demons and our own struggles. But we need to understand that we can fight them together rather than face them alone. By doing this we can unify and lean into these problems rather than run from them.

Stop being too proud. Open up to the world. Share your self. Share your pain. Share your struggle.

Find out that you’re not alone after all. Find out that there is a million others just like you. Find out that there is always a way out.
